No solo sob um mercado de Nairobi, algo \u00fatil estava a ser desperdi\u00e7ado. Todos os dias, toneladas de restos de vegetais, cascas de fruta e res\u00edduos org\u00e2nicos eram descartadas como lixo \u2014 um problema que Christine Ager decidiu encarar como um recurso. A sua solu\u00e7\u00e3o foi a vermicompostagem: utilizar minhocas para transformar esses res\u00edduos em fertilizante org\u00e2nico rico, e construir todo um ecossistema agr\u00edcola em torno dessa ideia simples e eficaz.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Um ano ap\u00f3s conquistar o 2.\u00ba lugar na categoria de Campe\u00e3 de Empoderamento Feminino do WAYA 2024, essa ideia tinha evolu\u00eddo para muito mais do que um neg\u00f3cio de fertilizantes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A Vermi-Farm Initiative expandiu-se de pouco mais de 1.200 agricultores apoiados para mais de 6.700 pequenos produtores em 12 novos condados \u2014 87% mulheres e 68% jovens com menos de 35 anos. A equipa mais do que duplicou, passando de 7 para 15 colaboradores, todos com menos de 35 anos e 11 deles mulheres. Para al\u00e9m disso, mais de 250 empregos sazonais e a tempo parcial foram criados atrav\u00e9s da implementa\u00e7\u00e3o das estufas inteligentes DigiShamba.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

O pr\u00e9mio foi aplicado de forma estrat\u00e9gica. Christine investiu na expans\u00e3o da capacidade de produ\u00e7\u00e3o, no lan\u00e7amento de uma linha de fertilizante l\u00edquido chamada Vermiliquid, na melhoria das infraestruturas de forma\u00e7\u00e3o e no refor\u00e7o dos sistemas de compostagem e das col\u00f3nias de minhocas. Esse investimento inicial atraiu financiamento adicional: 50.000 USD da Kenya Community Development Foundation, 20.000 USD da Z Zurich Foundation, 8.000 USD da Roddenberry Foundation e 5.000 USD da VALUE4HER ap\u00f3s um pr\u00e9mio global. As receitas mensais cresceram 3,4 vezes \u2014 de uma m\u00e9dia de 85.000 KES para 290.000 KES.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

O diferencial da Vermi-Farm n\u00e3o foi apenas a escala, mas o desenho do modelo para resolver m\u00faltiplos desafios em simult\u00e2neo. O programa Adapt Finance utilizou um sistema comunit\u00e1rio de poupan\u00e7a rotativa para integrar mais de 4.200 mulheres em 130 grupos rurais, permitindo-lhes co-propriedade de estufas e acesso a cr\u00e9dito adaptado \u00e0s suas realidades sazonais. Um pagamento inicial de cerca de 210 USD \u2014 apenas 20% do custo de uma unidade DigiShamba \u2014 permitiu o acesso \u00e0 agricultura de precis\u00e3o. Os resultados foram expressivos: mulheres que antes ganhavam cerca de 200 KES por semana passaram a reportar rendimentos semanais superiores a 17.000 KES.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A tecnologia est\u00e1 presente em todas as camadas da opera\u00e7\u00e3o. As estufas DigiShamba de segunda gera\u00e7\u00e3o incluem sensores IoT que monitorizam humidade do solo, temperatura e clima em tempo real, com dados enviados via USSD e WhatsApp. Um assistente virtual com intelig\u00eancia artificial, adaptado a dialetos locais e a utilizadores com baixa literacia, fornece orienta\u00e7\u00e3o sobre pragas, clima e ciclos agr\u00edcolas. A plataforma Vermi-Farm ePay, baseada em blockchain, assegura transpar\u00eancia nas transa\u00e7\u00f5es. M\u00f3dulos de forma\u00e7\u00e3o digital gamificados, acess\u00edveis por telem\u00f3veis b\u00e1sicos, ensinam pr\u00e1ticas agr\u00edcolas regenerativas e gest\u00e3o financeira.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

No plano ambiental, o modelo circular apresenta resultados mensur\u00e1veis. As estufas utilizam at\u00e9 78% menos \u00e1gua do que a agricultura convencional e aumentam a produtividade at\u00e9 sete vezes. Kits de vermicompostagem em tr\u00eas condados est\u00e3o a reduzir o uso de fertilizantes sint\u00e9ticos em mais de 45%. A iniciativa criou ainda 43 hortas escolares e 12 clubes agr\u00edcolas em parceria com a Zero Hunger Activists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

O reconhecimento de Christine tamb\u00e9m cresceu. Foi selecionada como Ignite African Women in Agribusiness Fellow 2025, mentoriza 57 jovens mulheres e foi destacada no cat\u00e1logo Leading African Women in Food 2024. Um perfil no jornal The Nairobian destacou o impacto do modelo em grupos comunit\u00e1rios, com aumentos significativos de rendimento.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
